"Voices from the Psalms: In
Community" - Psalm 79
Rev. Kathie Pownall preaching
This Sunday we
will consider the “lament” of a community. Last Sunday we examined
Personal Lament. Psalm 79 is a Communal Psalm of Lament which
expresses the anguish and all the feelings of people calling out to
God - anger, grief, frustration - and even in the depths of
despair, a belief that God is listening. The Psalms of Lament often
express the question, “How long, God? How long will this
last?” Each of us have things in our lives that we would like
God to fix - right now. Circumstances have caused us to feel great
loss and a sense of confusion, and we want “reasons” and
“solutions.” How can the Communal Psalms of Lament help us deal
with OUR anguish and that of our neighbors, our country, our
world? What issues do we share with others that could be lifted up
in a Communal Psalm of Lament? In these Psalms we are not
crying out for ourselves, but for all humanity.

We have all been apart far longer than anyone predicted in March
2020. It’s only been a few brief weeks of being in the sanctuary
together, and my single greatest joy is seeing and welcoming
worshipers back to Concord! If you are able to attend worship in person,
please help Welcome and Assist others by serving as a Greeter and/or
Usher. You arrive at 9:30am, and by about ten minutes after
worship ends are out the door. Follow the web link below or call
the Church Office and Margaret will help you find a morning that
suits your schedule.
You’ll be amazed by the amount of joy it
brings you and others!
