"Who Do You Say
That I Am? - Mark 8:27-38
Pastor Eric Markman
preaching
This Sunday as
Jesus and the disciples are traveling by themselves, Jesus asks
them, "But, who do you say that I am?" A question that
each of us can contemplate and dig deep into our souls to
answer for ourselves. The disciple Peter answers, "You
are the Messiah!" A powerful answer, but Jesus then explains
what that means - I must to to Jerusalem where I will be tried and
placed on a cross to die. Peter cannot accept this answer and
rebukes Jesus. His response is, "Get behind me Satan!"
What does Jesus mean, and how might we find guidance in this
statement?

We sow the seeds of
peace. We
look around, and we see so much — here at home and in many places
around the world — that makes us feel helpless. But we need to
hold on to and believe that peace is possible, and it begins with
us sowing the seeds of peace in every interaction and decision we
make. Through our gifts to the Peace & Global Witness
Offering, we are able, as a single congregation, to participate
in this larger work that we would not be able to do on our own.
Through your generous support, our gifts will combine with
churches across the PC(USA) to sow seeds of peace around the
globe. To watch a brief video about the work being done through
the P&GW offering, click on the picture above.
The Peace &
Global Witness Offering will be received through World Communion
Sunday, October 6. Envelopes are available in the pews or donate online.
We
are the peacemakers. And when we all do a little, it adds up to a
lot.

LGBTQ+
TASK FORCE
The LGBTQIA+ Task Force will be holding
three Lunch & Learns on three different topics on
our journey to being an openly affirming congregation. We will
provide a Zoom link for those who can't attend in person.
Following worship, grab a cup of coffee and head to
Fellowship Hall for lunch at 11:30am. The program will start at
noon. The dates are:
- September 29
- October 20
- November 17.
Why
should you come to this Lunch & Learn series?
In the past we’ve
been taught that there are only two genders and one “right” way
to love someone. We have learned (or acknowledged) more recently
that this is just not true for many of God’s beloved children,
but they have had to hide their true selves in order to fit in
and be safe.
As a Church community, we want to
be more welcoming and affirming of each individual, but if you
are confused about how to do that, you’re not alone.
We want to know what to say and
what not to say. We mean well, but we worry that our lack of
understanding will cause hurt and be the opposite of welcoming.
This series of three Lunch &
Learn sessions will help us make a beginning toward our goal.
Becoming mindfully more welcoming will take practice and
persistence. With God’s help we will learn and grow together.

Blended Worship:
What It Is, What It Isn't
Here is a great article
that discusses and clarifies issues faced by traditional churches
when deciding whether and how to embrace new or
“contemporary" music.
