Gospel
Music Sunday
"A Slap on the
Cheek" - Matthew 5:38-48
Pastor Eric Markman
preaching
This Sunday is
a celebration of Gospel Music in all its richness and also a
celebration of Black History Month. We will be looking at the
passage where Jesus says "turn the other cheek." What
does that mean? How did that change the thinking of the Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King, jr.? Why did Mahatma Gandhi find this passage
to be a teaching moment? Join us for great music, delicious chili
and chocolate, and answers to these questions.
Join us for
IN-PERSON WORSHIP on Sunday at 10:30am; doors open at
9:40am.
To join in WORSHIP ONLINE this
Sunday, February 23, click on the picture above to go
to our Concord website. Near the bottom of the home page, click on
the same picture to connect with the worship video. The worship
service will be available live at 10:30am Sunday morning or later
in the day to view at your convenience.

Children
in Worship - Gospel Music Sunday

This week we will not
be meeting for J.A.M. or Sunday Seekers. Children are invited to
come forward for Wondering Time. After Wondering
Time, children will remain in worship with their families for
this MOSTLY MUSICAL service. There are quiet activities in the
back of the Sanctuary that children may take to the pews.

Gospel Music
Sunday

This
Sunday, Feb. 23 @ 10:30am (note service time)
followed
by the Soup/Chili Cookoff & Chocolate Challenge in
Fellowship Hall
Once a year, usually during
or near Black History Month, we honor and explore the rich
heritage of authentic gospel music. This uniquely American
Christian music was born out of a coalescence of musical and
cultural forces in the early 20th century, when
the idioms and instruments of jazz, blues, and rural music met
with evangelical hymns, spirituals, and Pentecostalism. There was
– and in some circles continues to be – resistance to
gospel music’s role within the church. But the tunes and lyrical
themes – even of new arrangements – are unique expressions of
personal Christian testimony with deep biblical roots.
Gospel
means “good news,” so these songs traditionally emphasize
messages of hope amid struggle: that no matter the trial, sooner
or later the grace and justice of God will be delivered.
On our “Gospel Music Sunday,”
all of our music selections are a mix of traditional and new
Gospel arrangements. Some are even right out of our hymnal
(though we put our own touch on them!)
Mark your calendar for this
much-anticipated special Sunday service!

FRIENDSHIP HOUSE
TOILET PAPER DRIVE
At its many sites,
Friendship House goes through a LOT of toilet paper. Concord
is holding a toilet paper drive for them during the month of
March. Please bring whatever you are able to donate and put
it on the right side of the narthex as you enter. We hope to
build a huge “snowman” there. At the end of March, we will
deliver it to Friendship House.
Thank you!
