Pastor Eric Markman preaching
This Sunday we
will be reading from the Gospel of John. Jesus is asked “Are you
the Messiah?” But what does Messiah mean? Jesus says to those who
ask, look at what I am doing - and you can know from that. Jesus
came to help us see the world in a new way. Just before this
passage Jesus gave sight to a man born blind. But what is sight? Is
it physical eye sight or is it how we see and understand the world
around us?
Join us for

Concord's New Pastor
- Julia Burkley
Sunday’s May the 4th
(be with you) service was a beautiful example of collaboration
between Concord staff and pastor candidate Julia Burkley. The John
Williams music from the first Star Wars movie was an inspiring
beginning and end to the service. The youth, many of whom were
dressed up in Star Wars outfits (including hair styles), were
amazing.
Christina’s thoughtful Wondering
Time was followed by Julia preaching an inspiring
sermon that was Biblically based and encouraged us to live God’s
will for us on earth.
Best of all, Julia received a UNANIMOUS vote of
approval from Concord’s in-person and online congregation to be
Concord's next pastor. We are so thrilled.
Many thanks to the Pastor Nominating Committee
for 15 months of meetings, deliberations, reviews, interviews and
personal visits. Thanks also to Pastor Eric for his commitment to
Concord which enabled the PNC to nominate an outstanding candidate.
The plan is for Julia to start full-time with
Concord the first full week of August. Meanwhile, we will keep her
updated on church work and joys.

“You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind, and your
neighbor as yourself.”
Many, many thanks to
those who donated and supported the Concord Cares Team
in raising money for Friendship House. We were able to raise
$5,570 (this includes a $1,000 donation for raising $2,000, and an
additional $1,000 for raising $3,000)!!! Concord
Cares came in 3rd place for amount raised,
just behind SsAM and Friends of SsAM who raised $5,575…talk about
close! 😊
We would also like to thank our Concord Cares
Team members who walked on Saturday:
- John Barineau
- Dick and Peggy Carter
- Gayle and Chip Hazel
- Marj Johnson
- Grace and Maya Kroon, and friend, Aubrey
- Al and Dottie Lund
- Matthew, Christina, Teyton and Hobie Pressley
- Elliott and Candace Roseo
- Raven Studer
- Carmen, George, and Emelia Tirlea
- Nancy Tucker

There will be more
opportunities to support Friendship House and their ministries to
the homeless and the houseless in our community, so stay tuned!

Farewell to Dennis

As many of you may
know, Dennis Yoder, our facilities manager, was planning to retire
the end of May. That was before he was sidelined by a serious
cardiac condition. He has been out on leave since March
24 and during that time has been in and out of the
hospital. We hope his situation is under control now and that
he will regain his strength and health.
Dennis has been with us since January of
2023. In that short time, he took excellent care of our
building and grounds and was proactive in finding maintenance
concerns and in anticipating problems before they got worse. He was
an invaluable asset to the church and the preschool.
Out of concern for his health, we will not hold
a farewell event for him, but we will collect a purse as a way to
say thank you and to wish him well in retirement. If you would
like to contribute to this purse you can donate online or by check to
Concord Presbyterian Church. No matter how you donate, please
indicate it is for “Dennis - retirement.” Please have
your donations into the church by May 23.
In addition there will be cards in the back of
the church May 11, 18 and 25 if you would like to sign one or add a
note to thank Dennis.

Lunch & Learn- Housing, Advocacy, and Concord
Presbyterian
Session 2: May 18 following worship in Jessie's Room
Guest Speaker Rabbi Sonya Starr - Policy
Director,
Housing Alliance Delaware
Housing Issues in Legislature. How to
Advocate. May 22 Day For Housing.
Concord
Presbyterian has helped souls who are facing homelessness for
many years, through our ministry with Friendship House, Emmanuel
Dining Room, and Sojourners Place. A shortage of safe, affordable
housing is one of the biggest issues facing the United States.
Bigger and lasting improvements require changes in governmental
policies. Concord has organized a series of Lunch & Learn
sessions for youth and adults on Housing and Advocacy. The
remaining sessions will follow church on May 18 and June
1. Childcare will be available.
This series supports Day for Housing 2025 | HAD Site in Dover
Thursday, May 22 to advocate for solutions to the housing
crisis, organized by Housing Alliance Delaware.

We are currently
working on a do-it-yourself, updated photo directory and would like
to try to finish up by August, when new pastor Julia Burkley
arrives. Most Sundays, Terri Jones will be
taking photos in the front of the sanctuary during Gathering Time.
Stop by before or after snacking to have your picture taken and to
update your contact information.
We will be continuing this process over the
next few months, so don't worry if you can't make it this week.
Watch Concord Connects for future opportunities.
Deacons will also be working on getting current photos of our
homebound members. Please don't be concerned if you're not an
"official" church member - if you are part of our Concord
Family, we want to include you!

Lasting
drought has taken a toll on our Memorial Garden plants. We
currently need to replace one rhododendron and two azaleas. If
you have a loved one's remains in the Memorial Garden and would
like to contribute a plant in their honor, please contact Dottie
or Albert Lund. 302-230-1533 or 302-357-8318. We will purchase
the plants and install them, so no work involved.
A dedication will be placed in the bulletin and Concord Connects if you wish.
